A wonderful Performance art in the 6BC Botanical gardens. (Sic street between Ave B and C)
I stumbled upon this piece slightly after dusk with company after we just biked Governors Island. This performance is why one should have a love for the East Village now and forever.
Nine girls dressed in eighteen hundreds farmers clothes converge in he center of this park as a mysterious bell tolls. This starts the performance. The park is light by L.E.D. flashlights and lanterns scattered about. The 'play' repeats itself twice and is meant to be a 'wandering' work. As the girls sing in there made up languages, they separate and frolic around the park. You are meant to follow them around to spy into there worlds of play. If your lucky they will spot you, a spectator and spin around you or give you a flower freshly picked.
One performer who had caught my my was Lindsay Abromaitis Smith, who is an puppeteer. Her strange brown man (pictured below) seams to fly and jump weightlessly around the commotion. The thing that makes me appreciate this even more is the fact that this young woman has had a bad streak of luck in the past several days. Do you remember that Tornado in Brooklyn? Well her house is one most affected by it, coming home from school Lindsay found massive damage in her apt. She knew something was wrong when she opened her bedroom door and looked up, and saw the sky! Literally, no debris and everything in her room was still there, but the nights sky was looking down upon her, the roof was pulled up and swept across the yard. She struggled to collect her things for the performance, and saved what she could while her home is being rebuilt. Because of the stress she got the flu. Yet two days later, was here in the gardens blowing my mind with the amount of personality that was coming out of her puppet!
This was the last show of the season, but there is talks of it returning for the spring season..
Se Seulement Si..(If only If)
"Is inspired by superstitions and strange habits that one can create when no logical answer can be found. Conceived as : game, each character follows their ritual of reality creating their own rules through random logic. every hidden corner of the botanical garden is transformed into an absurd poem of intentions.
